Where most of the pool time actually happens

Watch a family use a pool for a summer and you notice something. Very little of the time is spent swimming. The adults sit in a few inches of water with a drink, the toddlers splash where they can stand, and everyone ends up on the shallow end. A pool tanning ledge, also called a sun shelf, is built for exactly that.

On a fiberglass pool the ledge is part of the shell mold, a wide shallow shelf at one end, deep enough to keep a lounge chair's legs underwater and shallow enough for a small child to sit. That means the ledge is chosen with the shell, so it is worth deciding early whether you want one and how big.

Water features are the other half of the job. Bubblers in the ledge, deck jets arcing in from the edge, a sheer descent off a raised wall and color lighting all add sound, movement and something to look at on warm desert evenings. Each one has to be plumbed, valved and scheduled properly, and each one has a Tucson catch: evaporation in the dry air, calcium left behind as the water dries, and dust from the monsoon. We plan for all three.

Why fiberglass makes a better tanning ledge

The shallowest, sunniest, most used part of the pool is also the hardest to keep nice. Here is why fiberglass handles it well.

Molded in, not built on

On a fiberglass pool the ledge is part of the one-piece shell, with the same smooth gelcoat as the rest. There is no separate shelf joined to the walls for ground movement to work on.

Algae resistance where it counts

A few inches of water in full Tucson sun gets warm fast, and warm shallow water is where algae starts. Smooth gelcoat gives it little to grip, so a quick brush usually keeps the ledge clean.

Gentle on little knees

Kids sit, crawl and slide around on a ledge all afternoon. Gelcoat is smooth, so they come out without the raw toes and scraped knees that rough plaster can leave.

Scale lines wipe off

Jets and sheer descents throw water into dry air, and as it evaporates our hard water leaves calcium behind. On gelcoat those deposits usually come off with the right cleaner instead of crusting on.

What we install

Tanning ledges

Shells with a molded sun shelf sized for one or two loungers, or for a full row of chairs and an umbrella. We help you pick the size against how your family actually uses the water.

Bubblers, deck jets and sheer descents

Bubblers set into the ledge, laminar or arcing deck jets from the edge, and sheer descents off a raised wall, each on its own valve so you can run them together or one at a time.

Lighting for desert evenings

Color LED pool and ledge lighting so the water stays useful and good looking after sunset, when summer temperatures finally drop enough to enjoy the yard.

What is included

Ledge and layout planning

Ledge size and position relative to the sun, the house and the shade, plus an umbrella sleeve in the ledge if you want one, all decided before the shell is ordered.

Feature plumbing and valves

Dedicated lines to each bubbler, jet and descent, pressure tested with the rest of the plumbing, and valves you can reach and understand.

Pump, controls and schedules

Features sized so they look right without overworking the pump, set on automation schedules so they run when you are home to enjoy them.

Lighting, start-up and handover

Lights wired and tested, then a start-up walkthrough showing how to switch features on and off and how to keep the nozzles clear after a dust storm.

How we plan and build ledges and features

  1. Free on-site estimate

We walk the yard, look at sun and shade through the day, and talk about who uses the pool and how. That decides the ledge size and which features are worth it.

  2. Shell, features and written quote

You choose the shell with its ledge, pick the features and lighting, and get an itemized quote with each feature priced on its own line.

  3. Permit and HOA approval

We submit to your jurisdiction and HOA. Raised walls for sheer descents and lighting can draw HOA questions, so we include them in the submittal.

  4. Dig, base and set

Excavation, including any caliche, a compacted and leveled base, and the shell set so the ledge sits exactly at the depth it was designed for.

  5. Feature plumbing and backfill

Lines run to every bubbler, jet and descent, pressure tested, then backfilled in stages as the pool fills.

  6. Deck, lighting and start-up

Coping, decking and any feature walls, lighting and automation set up, inspection, then start-up and a walkthrough of every feature.

Why plan your ledge and features with us

We plan features as part of the pool, not as extras bolted on at the end. Bubblers and deck jets need their plumbing in before backfill, and a ledge needs to be chosen before the shell is ordered. Getting those decisions in the right order is most of the job.

We are honest about what each feature costs to run. A sheer descent looks great and loses water to evaporation every hour it runs in dry air. We will tell you that and set it on a schedule rather than let it run all day.

Some features can be added to an existing fiberglass pool, like lighting and deck jets, depending on the plumbing and the deck. A tanning ledge cannot be added to a shell that does not have one. We will tell you which is which at the first visit.

Tanning ledge and water feature questions

What is the most expensive part of installing a pool?

Usually the shell itself and the site work to get it in the ground: excavation, caliche removal, the crane and the base. After that, decking and equipment are the big items. Features like bubblers, deck jets, sheer descents and lighting add less on their own, but several together add up, so we price each one separately.

What are the typical dimensions of a standard pool?

There is no single standard. Fiberglass shells run from small plunge pools around 10 to 16 feet long to family pools around 40 feet long, with widths usually topping out around 16 feet because of highway shipping. A tanning ledge takes up part of that length, so a shell with a large ledge has less swimming room than the same size without one.

Is a 12x24 pool considered small?

Yes, 12 by 24 feet is generally thought of as a small pool. Shells in that range can still include a modest tanning ledge, but the bigger the ledge, the less room there is to swim. We help you balance the two at the estimate.

What kills pool algae the fastest?

Brushing the affected area, raising the chlorine level with a proper shock and running the filter longer, together, is the fastest fix. On a tanning ledge, where shallow water warms up quickly in the sun, catching it early makes all the difference. Smooth gelcoat makes that brushing easy, and good circulation through the ledge helps keep it from coming back.

How much does a pool add to an electric bill?

It depends mostly on the pump and how long it runs. A variable speed pump on a sensible schedule uses far less power than an older single speed pump. Water features that need extra flow add to run time, which is why we put them on automation schedules instead of leaving them on all day.

What is the downside of fiberglass pools?

Shapes come from manufacturer molds, so a tanning ledge has to be chosen with the shell rather than designed freely. Width is limited by highway shipping, delivery needs crane access or a clear path, and deep diving wells are generally not available. We go through each one at the estimate.
